GIMP is the Linux equivalent of Photoshop. GIMP is short for GNU Image Manipulation Program. Photoshop is a great program, but GIMP is free. Photoshop costs $240 per year. I can buy a 4 GB RAM laptop for $240. (Requires minimum 14 inch on diagonal display.) Put a Linux Lubuntu operating system on it for free, and load GIMP on it for free. I use GIMP for editing pictures that go on the internet. You can get free images from unsplash.com.
3.1 To make a logo like the one on this page, you need to slide portions of images ontop of other images. You can get free photos and images from unsplash.com . We will practice by creating two words, “This Logo”. “This” will be on one image, and “Logo” will be on the other image. We will slide the word “This” onto the image of “Logo”, to create the words “This Logo”.
3.2 Open GIMP and create the two images.
3.2.1 Create the first image. Go to File > New > Create a New Image. Length 300 px and Height 100 px. Under Advanced Options choose Fill with: Transparency (Creates a transparent background.) Click OK.
3.2.2 Using the Text Tool, drag a rectangular box. Make the letter height 30 px. Select the A button for bolding, and type “This” in the box.
3.2.3 Notice in the layers box in the lower-right that there are two layers. The bottom layer is transparent. The top layer contains the letters.
3.2.4 Select the Move tool. Select the radio button Move the active layer.
3.2.5 Create the second image. Go to File > New > Create a New Image. Length 300 px and Height 100 px. Under Advanced Options choose Fill with: Transparency (Creates a transparent background.) Click OK.
3.2.6 Using the Text Tool, drag a rectangular box. Make the letter height 30 px. Select the A button, and type “Logo” in the box. Press Escape to remove the Text Tool dialog box.
3.3 Switch to the Move tool. Select the first image. Go to Edit > Copy the first image. Go to Edit > Paste “This” to the second image. Move the pasted word “This” on the “Logo” image. If you are satisfied then select the Rectangle Select Tool and click on the screen, and proceed to the next section to save your work. If you want to change something press the Edit > Undo repeatedly, and start over.
3.4 Go to File > Export. Name the file ThisLogo.png .
3.5 We will now save the photo using the Export command. Go to File > Export As … . We will name the image, ThisLogo.png . If we do not use a new name the photo will be written over. Click on Export in lower-right corner.
3.5.1 A window called Export Image as PNG will appear. Click on Export in lower-right corner.
3.5.2 Your image is now saved.
